$3 Thursday – Serving Tray Makeover

I’ve said before how much I love shopping at Target.
Here is one reason.
I loved this larger serving tray that was part of their Christmas collection.

Just look at the lovely curves.

Do I really use serving trays?
Especially a serving tray that is not food safe.
Well, no, and the price at $14.99 wasn’t that bad.
Why would they make a serving tray that is not food safe?
Probably because it is so pretty.

But on the 90% off Christmas sale at $1.49 for a gold leafed serving tray.
Sold.
Ok, so I bought four of them.
I knew they had potential.

My first makeover was a chalkboard.
I had a can of chalkboard paint calling my name. This was my first project with it.
I decided to try the chalkboard just in the center.

I did a lot of taping off but it wasn’t enough.
I ended up painting the first edge that I had planned on leaving gold.
I’m pretty happy with the results.
But where to put it and how to hang it??
Well, I’m still working on that.
But look at her (yeah I’m sure a chalkboard is a female).
With those curves I think it has to be.

For now she is a part of my Valentine corner.

I suppose this would look a bit better if I actually had a chalk message on it.
I thought I might have had some chalk but I don’t.
Or I can’t find it….
Really, I don’t think I have any.
Well, not now anyway.

Supplies:
Platter          $1.49
Chalkboard paint         on hand*
Painters tape        craft supply
Foam brush          craft supply
Total cost:       $1.49 plus basic supplies

* I think the chalkboard paint was $9.99 a quart and you use only a small amount, probably less than $.50 worth of it.

Next week I’ll share my second serving tray makeover.

  3. Wow. I love the shape of that tray! It is gorgeous as a chalkboard! (Have you thought about using those picture hanging strips to hang it? They work for me to hang plates.)

  4. Wow so cute, I have been looking for a tray just like this. I want to paint it black and add our initials using gold vinyl to the center of the tray. (with my cricut) I am working on a picture wall and would love to add this to it.

    Thanks for sharing!

  10. REALLY pretty, and what a great deal! Just popping in from the POPP :)
You should hot glue 2 pieces of pretty ribbon to the back, and then tie them into a bow. Then you just hang it on a nail and you're good to go. Great job!
