$3 Thursday - Glittered Bedspring trees

100_4644
You gotta love holiday crafts that cost you nothing out of pocket.  Here is one made with a reclaimed bedspring coil and glue and glitter I had on hand.
Thanks to my sister Jennifer for all of her hard work on pulling apart a bed to reach the bedsprings and for offering me a few of them.
Here is my treasure from my sister.  Not much to look at now but I knew other people did wonderful crafty things with them so why not me?

I pulled out a couple of the springs and cleaned them up.  Ok, I took the easy route and I ran them through the dishwasher.
This is how they looked after a quick wash and dry.

These bedsprings reminded me of a tree so I decided to decorate them with a bit of glitter.
Every tree needs a little bling.

I started out glittering two trees and started to work on a display with two glittered springs and one plain one.
I used regular ol’ Elmer’s glue.  I tried a sponge brush for the first one but found it had to get the whole spring covered with glue.
For the next two I mostly used my fingers to spread the glue.  I put some glue on the spring and used my fingers to coat the whole spring.
I covered about half of the spring, let it dry for a while and then covered the other half.
After it was dry there were a few spots that needed a bit more glue and glitter but not as much as when I applies the glue with the sponge brush.
Sure it was messy but when is working with glitter not messy???

I realized I needed to glitter a third one to even out the display.  Looks better with three glittered trees.

I just love this glitter.  I think I’ve had it in my stash for years and never used it until now.

I love the contrast of the green trees with the burgundy photo album in the background.

The bedspring trees are on a shelf in this cabinet.
I haven’t finished the top of the cabinet.
I’m sort of stumped.
I’ve tried a few things but am not happy with it yet.
I’ll keep trying and hopefully finish it this week.

I decided the trees needed a little something so I pulled out some wood stars from the basket of ornaments on the shelf below the trees.

I liked this better but I needed two stars for each spring to keep the stars upright.  I didn’t have enough yellow stars so the one on the right has a blue star behind it.  It didn’t seem to stand out until I took a look
at this picture.
Oh well, it doesn’t bother me and is only noticable if I’m really close and looking at it from a certain angle.

I’m loving my new thrifty trees.

  12. How wonderful. You're going to think I'm crazy, but I always knew that there was potential in old bedding springs. I've actually spent quite a bit of time thinking about it, and I don't even have any springs. You have taken a load off my mind. I was thinking that the springs were potential just being thrown out. Now I know that someone (someone creative like you) is taking full advantage of these springs in a beautiful and creative way. Thank you for sharing on the Boardwalk Bragfest.
